Phonics Help

Saxon Phonics

Saxon Phonics is an everyday part of our school day. It teaches kids strategies to use to learn how to read and spell. It is difficult while learning - especially for us parents. We didn't have this system when we were in school so it is hard to understand and follow.

Each lesson builds on the day before. It reviews daily. Don't be worried if your child doesn't get the concept right away - it might take awhile. This system was built for mastery towards the end of the year. The more we practice - the better they will get at coding.

It does work!!!! I have seen the benefits of learning phonics this way and how the kids use the strategies they have learned to other things.

Here is all of the lessons for the year and what each lesson covers.

Some other coding that will help:
  • Double consonants: when you have twin consonants like in hill or floss. You only hear one of the letters. We cross off the last letter
  • S like in Rose: When the s like in rose or as, it sounds like a /z/, not an /s/ like in sun or bus. Put a line through it to show its different sounds.
  • Accent Marks: In these words: no, so, I, go, me These words get a macron for its long vowel sound. It also gets an accent mark after the vowel. This is due to its one syllable and ending in a long vowel. Whenever you see a word that follows those rules - it gets a macron and an accent mark.
  • Blank Lines: When you see any blank lines - these parts are done orally in class. They should have a word or letter on the blank if they were at school. If your child was absent - there is not way to make up this part. Leave the blank lines alone. It was done out loud at school!
